Interior Beam Curve Cut
A curved archway is being cut on this beam for one of the timber accents in the remodel we are doing in Nelson, BC. Where walls were removed to give the house a more open feel, the curved archways will still give the sense of an entrance into the living room area.
The curved cut was done with a chain saw, using an attached base plate that was custom fabricated for this application. The cut is done 1/8″ from the layout line, and then it is finished to the line with a belt sander. A gas powered chain saw is useful for cutting outdoors, but an electric chain saw is necessary for indoor use.

Interior Beam Curve Layout
Curves are to be cut into several timber accents for this remodel, and the layout method was both quick and accurate.
We used a standard tape measure as a tramel. The tape was secured at one end to a saw horse so that it would pivot on a nail. The other end of the tape had a hole drilled into it to allow for a pencil to slot in and draw the line.
To centre is found by moving the timber to meet both end points of the curve, and then the tape is swung in an arc with the pencil marking the curve on the beam.

Land Ark Wood Finish
The Land Ark wood finish is a great natural and non-toxic product for interior timbers and trim. It’s important to us to use as many materials and finishes as possible that are healthy for the homeowners and for our team members that are applying the finish. Natural finishes also mean a smaller ecological footprint.
Land Ark finish is a penetrating oil finish made of natural ingredients from sustainable sources. The producers recommend using lambs wool or a clean rag for application, but we are using a roller with excellent results. Two coats are rollered on (wet on wet), and the excess is then buffed off.
