Adding an inlay to the top of this sideboard creates a focal point to draw the eye to the beautiful grain detail of the black walnut. Light coloured maple wood used for the inlay contrasts strongly with the walnut and makes a striking impression.

The most challenging part of the inlay was working with the very thin pieces of maple and getting the mitred corners to fit perfectly so that all the edges were clean and tightly jointed.

Other combinations of wood for this sideboard would be maple (light) with a walnut (dark) inlay, or cherry (reddish) with an ash (very light) inlay. It’s fun to play with combinations of different woods, as each set of woods gives a specific look and feel to the piece.
