Wooden I-beams are installed during the straw bale stacking process as anchor points for hanging cabinets or heavy artwork. This must be thought about at the planning stages, because straw bale walls covered in plaster are not strong enough to hold the weight of heavy objects.
This photo shows the kitchen area with I-beams for mounting cabinets. The I-beams are made of 2×4 and plywood, and the bales are carved with a lancelot tool to make room for the ends of the I-beams.
For smaller artwork, a full I-beam is not necessary. Instead, drive a wooden stake into the bale wall with a 4″x4″ piece of plywood attached to it. The plywood will lie flush with the inside of the wall underneath the plaster.
