    House Siding Finished

    Siding Project - Finished

Through rain and shine, we finished the cedar siding before the owner’s course of construction insurance expired. We enjoyed the added energy and comraderie of the two extra people that helped our usual crew to get this project done in time.

The addition that was built onto the house increased the square footage of the living space. Having the cedar siding installed on the new and old sections of the house at the same time effectively integrated them into one house. The owner was really pleased with the result, and we were happy to be able to get it completed for her on such a tight deadline.

Cedar: To Stain Or Not To Stain?

    Siding Project - Cedar

Cedar is a great choice for outdoor applications such as siding, decking, saunas, gazebos, and furniture because it does not need to be pressure treated or coated with harmful chemicals to preserve the wood.

Cedar contains oils that act as preservatives, making it naturally decay resistant, and the distinctive cedar aroma comes from natural organic compounds – including thuja plicins – that repel insects. Only when cedar is in direct contact with the ground does it need a sealant to protect against moisture.

Over time, weathered cedar will turn an attractive silver-gray colour highlighted by darker streaks. Alternatively, using a natural wood coating product can preserve the original colour of the cedar without negating the ecological benefits of using cedar. Sustainable harvesting from local sources makes this an even more environmentally friendly option.

    Ladder Jacks for Tricky Sites

    Siding Project - Tar Paper

The uneven ground on this house site made it too difficult to use scaffolding. Instead, ladder jacks gave us the range and flexibility we needed to install the tar paper and cedar siding up to 35 feet off the ground.

The ground around this house was backfilled but not smoothed, and site was on a hill as well, so we were working with different levels all over the place.

A set of ladder jacks clips onto two ladders, and we ran planks between them. The jacks could be adjusted to any height on the ladders, and with two stacked 2″ x 10″ planks attached to the jacks, we had a 16 foot span to work on.

Siding Project On A Tight Deadline

    Siding Project

A cedar siding project came up this spring with a tight deadline. The whole house needed to be sided before the owner’s current Course of Construction insurance expired.

The house had some complicated spots which would require more cutting and detailed carpentry to make the finished product look great. We started working on the lower walls first to establish our systems efficiently before moving on to the two storey wall sections.
