    Bolted Joint

    Bolted Joint

In post and beam timber work, some notching is done to assure structural integrity of the frame, and the timbers must be held together with hardware. This differs from the mortise and tenon wood joinery of traditional timber framing.

This photo shows the subtle and attractive result of using GRK Fasteners to attach a brace in a post and beam carport. The screws are self-tapping, and the washer is incorporated into the head of fastener, both of which are time saving features when assembling the frame on site.

    GRK Fastener

    GRK Fastener

A GRK Fastener looks like a long screw at first glance, but it is specially designed to join timbers together tightly with less torque than is needed for a lag bolt.

A GRK Fastener is much thinner than a lag bolt, but it is superior in function and much easier to use in a post and beam structure. The threaded end of the fastener screws into the connecting timber. A small reverse thread section makes a larger hole so the smooth shank near the head can slide smoothly through the near timber, allowing both timbers to suck together tightly and with less drag than a lag bolt.

The fasteners used on the carport we just finished in Castlegar were 12″ long with a 1/4″ diameter.

    Post & Beam Carport

    Post and Beam Carport

A post and beam structure will give the look and feel of a timber structure in a much shorter time frame, as bolts are used instead of wood joinery. This carport in Castlegar provides a great covered parking area as well as adding character to the house.

After the timbers were cut and coated in the shop, the structure was put up quickly. The owner chose metal sheet roofing with snow stop strips to prevent the snow from sliding off.

While erecting a frame, often finger marks will dirty the timbers. So any marks are wiped off and the final coat of wood finish is done on site to ensure that the frame looks amazing.
