Cedar is a great choice for outdoor applications such as siding, decking, saunas, gazebos, and furniture because it does not need to be pressure treated or coated with harmful chemicals to preserve the wood.

Cedar contains oils that act as preservatives, making it naturally decay resistant, and the distinctive cedar aroma comes from natural organic compounds – including thuja plicins – that repel insects. Only when cedar is in direct contact with the ground does it need a sealant to protect against moisture.

Over time, weathered cedar will turn an attractive silver-gray colour highlighted by darker streaks. Alternatively, using a natural wood coating product can preserve the original colour of the cedar without negating the ecological benefits of using cedar. Sustainable harvesting from local sources makes this an even more environmentally friendly option.
