A small addition enlarged the master bedroom of this house a number of years ago, but the slope that the house sits on is degrading and the foundation that was poured for the addition was sagging substantially.
To fix the concrete foundation for the addition would have meant digging down 20 feet to find stable ground. Instead these timber braces were an excellent choice to provide the stability needed for less cost and in an attractive form that suits the aesthetic of the house. Using local wood instead of concrete also means reducing the embodied energy of this renovation.
Specially fabricated metal brackets were used to secure the braces to the original house and foundation for maximum structural rigidity.
